FWeekly: How Could I Have Known That Murder Can Sometimes Smell Like Honeysuckle?

Man, I’m rusty! I don’t know how to write these introductions anymore. Do you even read them? Probably skip right to the pictures and lists, eh? You lazy youngsters. Anyway, I’ve got some movies, tv shows and books to tell you about before the next post (which will be about the UK trip!), so let’s get right to it!

By some miracle, I’ve actually managed to watch movies this month. Real, full-length movies. Sometimes even at the theatre! And looking back, it’s easy to see how I got my cinematic mojo back, because it all started with Magic Mike XXL. I’ve been waiting all year for it. People ask me what movie I want to see this year, and I immediately reply Magic Mike XXL. And then they look at me funny. It’s your loss.

So yeah, I spent months and months anticipating stripper jokes and unapologetic dance routines, looking forward to that special kind of feeling that comes from watching a movie for women, where men are the desert. And it was crazy good.

Also got the see Southpaw, which is as dramatic as it is motivating. Whenever I need to get to work I put on Eminem’s Phenomenal and I’m set for hours. Craving a different kind of drama though, I turned to Far From the Madding Crowd, and it was… sad. Like, I can’t stop crying at how beautiful and tragic this is sad. Anyone who likes classic romance stories should watch it, it’s perfect.

Finally, just two weeks ago I caught The Martian in the cinemas, which was a surprising mood booster! Emotionally, the movie is all over the place: it’s epic, then it’s funny, then it’s scary, and then it’s tragic, and we’re back to funny again – total rollercoaster, and that’s why I loved it. Oh and bless that disco score. I don’t care what you say, you know you love it.

As for classic films, I rewatched three of my favorite mystery movies for our next podcast episode (airs this wednesday!), one of them being Hitchcock’s Vertigo, hence Novak looking flawless up there. I also saw Double Indemnity for the first time ever, which is were the title is from.

I’m not sure how this happened, but I now watch four shows a week. That’s only four. Where did all my shows go? I’m left with Scandal (holy smokes, on that last episode all my Olitz dreams came true), Once Upon a Time (kinda boring), Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jane the Virgin, and The Good Wife. I did drop Supernatural right on its eleventh season premiere, though – not even I can defend it anymore.

But fear not, I can fill this television void with the brand new The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Have you seen him? What a great job he’s doing. And he has the cutest south african accent – there, I said it! He’s impossibly sweet. I might have a little crush. Anyway, he’s funny. And the writing is still on point.

Aaaand, I don’t have the energy to write about all the books I’ve read and liked since the last FWeekly post, so we’ll leave that for next time, guys.

What have you been watching lately? Got any recommendations for new shows?

  • You know, I quit Once Upon a Time and Scandal because why bother anymore. And Supernatural I quit like 3 seasons ago. And The Good Wife.. mm, I’ll give it a watch though the drama revolving around the show during last season kind of put me off from it. Like, nobody likes a bitch!

PS: Glad you’re back again and can’t wait to read about your UK trip! 🙂

    • I’ve considered dropping Scandal many times in the last two (?) seasons, but this season… it’s actually going somewhere, I’m impressed.

Hmm, not sure where The Good Wife is heading. It’s not bad, but it’s not as good as it was in the early seasons either… oh, one good thing is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the newest cast addition. 😉

But otherwise I’m not sure anymore. It’s fallen into this weird routine of trying to find new love interests for Alicia every season, it’s so… obvious, you know? The show is a little lost, but hopefully it will get better soon – hate to see JDM go to waste!

      What drama???

    • OH YEAH, JEFFREY! I FORGOT ALREADY. GOD DAMN IT.. Now I even remember saying that I have to watch it because of him with clearly no interest in the show anymore except in him.. oh well. Tuning back in for The Good Wife! 😀

  • Far From the Madding Crowd sounds good (and it’s got good reviews) so I might watch that. I’m disappointed I’d have to catch The Martian when it comes on DVD, I did not have time to go to the movies this month! The book was hilarious, and I hope to appreciate the movie as well.

  • Hi Sofia welcome back to the blogosphere! I’m still watching ‘Supernatural,’ but I really do think it’s time to wrap it up. I felt that way last year. Ten years would have been a great number to go out on. There’s only so many times these guys can destroy the world. I wish they would wrap up the show with dignity and move on. Who knows in 10 or 15 years they may come back like the ‘X-Files,’ but we need a break for a while. I like ‘Scandal’ but I have really started to hate Fitz’s character. He’s such an awful person. I don’t know what sane woman would want a man like that.

    • Thanks, Mariah! Hmm yeah, I totally agree with you on that, Supernatural should’ve ended with season 10. I may give this season a try in the future because hell, I’ve come this far, might was well see it through. But it is getting hard to take it seriously at this point.

Oh Fitz IS a terrible person (let’s not forget he suffocated an old woman to death), but I don’t think Olivia is sane, so I suppose they deserve each other.

  • I’ve been watching the same old shows; Friends, Big Bang. Married at First Sight Australia might be the newest. I also watched Southpaw and Far From The Madding Crowd, they’re pretty much great and a gem for 2015. Missed The Martian :/ Hope you have a good week!

    • Glad you enjoyed Southpaw and Far From the Madding Crowd! I’ve never seen Married at First Sight, but it looks like a fun reality show. If it were on TLC here I’d so watch it.
