Suddenly, Last June: Consider This Situation Fuckin’ Handled

Another month has gone by and hooray, we’re halfway through the year! Yeah that doesn’t sound right, time passing sucks. That said I cannot wait for this month to be over, because that will mean I will finally be on vacation. Until the end of July things will be a little hectic with studying, so I can’t promise I will publish any more posts until then; yes, this may be the beginning of a short hiatus, loves.

So let’s take a look at the month of June, which was nice! I saw five movies, caught up with three tv shows, and read three books.

I fight, and I give, for the world I know can be.
The movies I saw in June were pretty awesome. First up is Raw (2016), which I admire but won’t be seeing again. Next was O Pátio das Cantigas (2015), a remake of a classic portuguese film from the 40s that turned out to be a charming comedy and ended with a Bollywood inspired number (but it made sense!)

Like everyone else, I saw Wonder Woman (2017) and loved it, and legit cried at how beautiful it was to see a female superhero on the big screen (but then, I’m also known for crying in X-Men movies). I almost finished watching Road to Perdition (2002) for the first time, but my grandma was with me and it was time for her telenovelas – you do not mess with that.

Last but not least (in fact, BEST), I watched Get Out (2017). It was so freaky and clever and hilarious, but let me just say, Kaluuya’s facial expressions made the film for me. His are you kidding me with this shit smile is boyfriend best actor material. Also Catharine Keener and her teacup in the most unnerving scene of the year so far. With a narrative that was both thought-provoking and entertaining, and a dash of suspense, I’m positive Get Out will be in my Best of the Year lists.

Got a light?
Before I share with you the tv shows I saw last month, I need to get this out: THE EXORCIST IS COMING BACK. After months of not knowing wether the show would be picked up for a second season, we got the news that the FOX series is coming back in September, YES! The storyline will move on from the Rance family to another supernatural incident, but the hot priest duo of Ortega and Keane will remain. I feel like none of you are watching this show, so get on it! Can’t guarantee a good night’s sleep though.

Alright, so what did I watch this past month?? As expected, I binged Orange is The New Black‘s season 5 on Netflix and loved it, I can’t get enough of this show. I also kept up with Twin Peaks (thoughts on that in a later post) and finished watching the latest season of Better Call Saul, still going strong with an emotional finale.

books + books + books
As for books I tried reading Uprooted but I guess YA fantasy is just not agreeing with me these days, so I moved on to my most trusted genre: romantic suspense. And to make sure I’d get it right, I got three novels from one of my favourite authors, Loreth Anne White. They were In the Waning Light – loved the small fishing town setting -, The Drowned Girls (Angie Pallorino #01) – loved it even more because of all the details on police proceedings, give me all the gory science please! -, and In The Barren Ground, which I am reading right now.

What to Expect in July:
The theme of the month will be David Lynch until I can actually write about him and his movies. I’m also participating in an online course on Hitchcock’s career, but I’m not sure how that will turn out since the biggest part of the work will be done this month and time is not my friend right now. Like I said, I’ll be in hiatus until the end of the month to study, but prepare yourself because I’ll be back in August to SLAY.

Anyway I will be updating all social media (especially twitter with super relevant Twin Peaks tweets), and reading all your kickass posts on Baby Driver, which I don’t get to see until August 3rd. Worse, no date in sight for The Beguiled. SOMEONE PUT ME IN CHARGE OF PORTUGAL’S PREMIERE DATES.

WARNING: Some of these are really old. And the list is LONG,
I add them as I go and I’ve had this post in draft for waaaay too long!

Sati reviewed Alien Covenant and Wonder Woman, with drastically different reactions I can relate to, and also shared her thoughts on Prisoners
Mettel saw Snatched and thinks it’s the worst movie of the year so far, yikes!
+ Brittani saw and loved Wonder Woman, and also reviewed Split
+ Jay listed his Top 10 Actors Who Play Assholes and reviewed the sweet A Man Called Ove
+ Alex did a whole post on his favourite director, Ingmar Bergman
+ Katy shared what Harry Potter means to her!
+ Lindsey wrote about 5 books she’d like to see being adapted to the big screen
+ Vern looked closely at Sofia Coppola’s career, which is flawless
+ Maria reviewed Words in Deep Blue, a book I’ve wanted to read for a long time!
+ and finally, Tanea has a whole new blog called Hollywood and Wine, and already I’m loving her new posts like 50 Blog Post Ideas for Entertainment, Geek and Lifestyle Bloggers (I will be trying some of these in August for sure!)

  • Thanks for the link and good luck! Hopefully you’ll make it to the end of July safely and I can’t wait to see your Lynch inspired posts. Though I still haven’t finished watching Twin Peaks’s season 2.

Uprooted was blah for me so I’m not sure it’s the best Ya fantasy to read anyway.. have you read Nevernight? That’s a really good one once you get past the first 100 pages or so. I recommend and you know me and Ya fantasy, we like best friends! 😀

    • Thank you! Yeah, I’m starting to realise we can’t always trust the hype. Or the hate, because I’ve read some bad things about Nevernight, but it is still on my TBR and you liking it confirms if was the right decision!

Actually I have a post lined-up for when I return that has a bunch of series I want to read (it was a Top Ten Tuesday I missed!), most of them YA , so I’m counting on you to help me figure out which I should read/stay clear from!! 😉

  • Thank you for links! Though I’m not sure calling my insane rant on Prisoners ‘thoughts’ is valid 🙂 I’m still behind on Twin Peaks. This is literally the only show I watch now and i’m still 4 episodes behind, it’s insane. I did like Get Out but not as much as everyone else Kaluuya was actually much better in one of the early episodes of Black Mirror. As for Baby Driver…were boy, do I have kickass thoughts on that in last RF as pretty much the sole person in blogoshpere to absolutely hate that movie.

    • I should’ve written RAGING THOUGHTS ? Well I can’t blame you, I was behind for two weeks not so long ago (episodes 7 and 8). I’m loving it, but it requires my full attention and sometimes at the end of the day I just don’t have the energy for that kind of mind-fuckness.

I had no idea who Kaluuya was! I saw Sicario a few weeks later and he was a pleasant surprise. Haha yeah you’re really going against the current with that one. I honestly have no idea if I’ll like it or not, I’m not really a fan of Elgort and “stylish” it very relative!

  • Awesome post! It sounds like you have a lot going on in July! I hope it’s a good month for you and you’re able to finish everything you need to do. Wonder Woman is probably my favorite movie of the year! So happy you enjoyed that one. I cried too, every time I saw it (which was three times lol). Get Out is on my to-watch list. I’ve heard so many amazing things about it. I haven’t seen The Exorcist, but I would’ve been really surprised if it didn’t get renewed. Every new episode seems to trend on Twitter. But then again, it’s Fox.

Thanks for linking my HP post! <3

    • If by “a lot” you mean days and days of studying alone and nerve-wrecking exams than yes, haha. Thanks Katy, I hope so, too!

It may have been trending but ratings we pretty low, and you know how important that is! I was scared it could be next Hannibal (still not okay with it!), but thankfully FOX gave it another shot!

  • Thanks for the link! Good luck with that class.
I really want to see Raw. It isn’t available anywhere near me yet. I ended up being disappointed with this season of OITNB but it had some really beautiful moments in it. It was ballsy of them to do an entire season based on three days too.

    • Thanks Brittani, I need some luck! That sucks, I was actually surprised it premiered here so soon, especially when movies like The Beguiled have no release date in sight!

I heard some complaints, but this season worked for me! I think the whole three days thing worked because we can binge the show, so we stay in the moment. This was definitely not their strongest season, but tbh it will be hard for me to not love a season of OITNB. Kind of scared of what will happen in the next though, with characters going their separate ways!

  • I’m participating in the #Hitchcock50 course too! So far I’m really liking it but I find it hard to keep current with the daily content uploads. What I usually do is either catch up at night or on the weekends.

Have you ever seen Ripper Street? It’s a BBC series – really awesome stuff, you should definitely check it out 😉

    • Yeah it’s pretty intense, and watching the movies on top of the contents takes a lot of time! I’ve barely managed to check anything out, hoping to catch up after my exams bc I really want to learn more about Hitchcock.

Oooooh jack the ripper, and Matthew Macfadyen plays a detective??? Sold!
